The Garrick Gaieties and Other Hits of 1925-26 Thu, Aug 9, 7:30 - 9:30 pm Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute |

After a promising start on Broadway (their Poor Little Ritz Girl his the Great White Way in 1920, when Rodgers was only 18), Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart found it almost impossible to establish themselves. Five years of occasional amateur work and blunt rejection by producers left them at the verge of giving up completely. Hart planned to return to translating German plays for the American stage and Rodgers was considering a sales post with a children's underwear manufactuer when, in 1925 they were approached to do the music for a single performance revue to benefit the financially-pressed Theatre Guild.
They took the job reluctantly only when they were reminded that Theatre Guild productions were almost always reviewed favorably by the press and the rest, as they say, is history. Garrick Gaieties, which included the classic "Manhattan" and "Sentimental Me", ran for 211 performances and was followed a successful "2nd Edition", which featured the delightful "Mountain Greenery".
But that's hardly all that was happening in those two great years -- Tin Pan Alley was still in full swing, churning out timeless standards almost weekly, and Broadway was a veritable hot bed of creativity, with shows like the Gershwins' Lady, Be Good!, Tip-Toes, and Oh, Kay, Irving Caesar & Vincent Youmans' No, No, Nanette, Otto Harbach & Oscar Hammerstein's Rose-Marie, and a spate of Rodgers & Hart's own projects, resulting from their new-won prominence: Peggy-Ann, Betsy, Lido Lady, and The Girl Friend.
Ken Peplowski, with his ensemble (featuring old OFAM friends Derek Smith on piano, Howard Alden on guitar and Ian Whitcomb on whatever, among others), proposes to transport you back to the golden years of 1925-26 with an evening of smash hits from those years, from both Tin Pan Alley and Broadway, including "Manhattan", "Mountain Greenery", "The Girl Friend", "The Blue Room", "Tea For Two", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Sweet And Lowdown", "Lady Be Good", "Sugar", "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie", "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Mississippi Mud" and many more.
