Billie's Blues
Monette's, Harlem 1933
Fri, Aug 7, 2:00 - 3:15 pm
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
In 1933 record producer John Hammond visited Monette’s Supper Club in Harlem to check out a promising singer. Instead a 17-year-old named Billie Holiday took the stage. The rest is the history we celebrate here. This show looks at the astounding legacy of Billie Holiday, dating from her early influences/first recordings to her later sessions, including some of her own compositions. Look for “Down Hearted Blues”, “I Wished On The Moon”, “I Must Hae That Man”, “Fine and Mellow”, “God Bless The Child”, and more.
