Stormy Weather The Harold Arlen Songbook Sat, Aug 6, 8:00 - 10:00 pm Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute |
|
We complete our journey through the Ella Fitzgerald Songbook with her 1961 tribute to Harold Arlen, the 6th in the Verve series. Composer/arranger/trumpeter Billy May who worked extensively with Sinatra among many others at Capital, arranged and conducted the two-disc album set.
As with the other songwriters in the Fitzgerald Songbook series, Sinatra was associated with many of Arlen's songs. Ken has chosen a number of those particularly from the 28 songs from her album, and 2 that she didn't record. We especially pleased to be doing this concert: a unique and prolific American Songbook composer, Harold Arlen isn't as well-known as his more Broadway-centric peers, so it is great to give him special focus.
[The album cover art for the ArlenSongbook is a portrait of Fitzgerald by French artist Henri Matisse.]
