Tony Glausi
Background, professional training and performance history
Hailed as "a great writer and a terrific trumpet player" by legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach, and said by jazz artist Dave Douglas to be "one of the finest young trumpeters", Tony Glausi is an award-winning trumpeter, keyboardist, composer, arranger, and producer.
Tony grew up in a musical family, and was exposed to music of all genres, developing an affinity for classical music, swing era jazz, R&B, and gospel hymns. He taught himself to play by ear and later developed these abilities through advanced studies in piano performance and theory. A trumpeter and composer by the age of ten, it wasn’t until late in high school that Tony began to focus on jazz and improvisation.
Tony is an active performer and recording artist, playing over 100 shows last year and recording on over a dozen records. Tony also leads his own jazz quintet and nine-piece funk band. As a composer, he has written works for small jazz groups, large jazz ensembles, various chamber ensembles, funk bands, and soundtrack music for several short films and TV web series. Tony is pursuing his master's in jazz composition at the UO.
Artist statement and teaching philosophy
“I believe music has the power to completely transform people - to change the way we think about the world, to inspire us to achieve great things, to brighten minds, mend broken hearts, and uplift spirits. As a performer and composer I hope that my music will accomplish this while bringing hope, joy, and excitement into people's lives; as a teacher I hope to show my students how to do that as they develop their own voice and gain a deep understanding of and fluency with music, no matter their ultimate field of study.”
Instruments & classes taught
Tony teaches both piano and trumpet with an emphasis on jazz and improvisation. He also teaches music theory and composition.
