kids in music class
It's Back to {Music} School!
by Ginevra Ralph, Director of Education
It’s "Back to {Music} School" time for all ages, and we have a great line up of private lesson Faculty and 15 different classes for you to choose from this term. We offer private and semi-private instruction on most instruments, voice and a variety of dance classes – and encourage families and friends to make music together with design-your-own lessons. You can start private lessons at any time.
Beginning classes (piano, guitar, violin, tap and musical theatre dance) are a fun way to get introduced to an instrument or dance, while making friends along the way. Once you have a few skills under your belt and want to make music with others, then join in on the more advanced classes, or “design your own” bluegrass band, saxophone quartet, violin trio, or a cappella group, and we’ll match you with the right coach.
Parents: especially for your younger students you may be wondering where to start. The Shedd’s Music Box is great way to let kids first explore a wide range of options so that they have some hands-on knowledge about what an instrument actually feels and sounds like. The weekly Music Box class does just that – each week featuring some basic music skills, plus a hands-on introduction of a different instrument by a guest instructor. We encourage parents or grandparents to stay, and even participate, in order to have a special conversation over dinner! Who knew that trumpet was the “right” instrument for your child? Or that a saxophone can really tickle at first? Or what fun a ukulele can be? You do not have to sign up for the whole term with this unique Wednesday afternoon class, but can drop in at any time.
At The Shedd, we encourage experimentation at any age to find your own special “fit” – with an instrument, with an instructor, with musical styles. Adults can even create their own Music Box experience by just scheduling a sample lesson or two on several instruments.
No one ever “quits” making music at The Shedd – they just try something different!! We encourage life-long music-makers who do it for the fun of it!

Focus on the Classes...
WHERE TO START – Join in on introductory classes to explore your interests:
MUSIC BOX: a great way to try out at least 12 different instruments before choosing something to focus on – and parents learn a lot too about instruments they have never had the chance to touch!
PIANO: always a good starting point – even drummers should understand the keyboard, scales, rhythm, treble and bass clefs, etc.
VIOLIN: our beginning classes explore all the wonderful music possible with violin/fiddle, and build skills that let students pursue those interests.
GUITAR: whether folk, classic or rock, guitar is such an important instrument to lifelong music making.
SINGING: our classes are designed to welcome beginners or returnees of any age who want to sing with others for great fun.
DANCE: join us for ballroom, tap, or musical theater to get you moving to the music.
MAKE YOUR OWN: want to learn something with your friends or family? You can create your own class that fits your abilities, interests and schedule!
