Easter Parade
M-G-M (1948)

Recital Hall, The Shedd Institute
When Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) is unexpectedly dumped by his vaudeville dance partner and love interest Nadine (Ann Miller), he brags that he can easily train any chorus girl to take her place. To prove his point, he offers Hannah Brown (Judy Garland) from the chorus line at a local bar a handsome salary to be his new partner. Although it's tough going, Hannah & Hewes (as they come to be known) make it to the big time. Hannah falls for Don hard, but Don (who thinks he is still in love with Nadine) is all business. In the end, after the usual fighting, hurt feelings, missed opportunities, and production numbers, the two get together in time to step out in New York's Easter Parade. Set in 1911, Easter Parade has songs and score by Irving Berlin and is the only film Astaire and Garland appear in together. Highlights include Astaire's "Drum Crazy" and "Steppin' Out with My Baby," Ann Miller's "Shaking the Blues Away," and several great Astaire/Garland numbers, including "I Love a Piano", "A Couple of Swells", and "Easter Parade". MGM (1948). 104 minutes.
