Heat Wave
Irving Berlin
Tue, Aug 8, 8:00 - 10:00 pm
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
''Irving Berlin has no place in American music. He is American music. Emotionally, he honestly absorbs the vibrations emanating from the people, manners and life of his time and, in turn, gives these impressions back to the world -- simplified, clarified and glorified.'' -- Jerome Kern, 1924
Coming from a man who was himself recognized as one of the giants of the fresh, exciting, decidedly New World artform that was storming America's popular imagination, this is strong praise. Yet in 1924 Berlin was relatively early in a career that would carry him through another 40 years. Through the course of that long career he wrote more nearly 1000 songs, 19 musicals and the scores of 18 movies. This evening Jesse Cloninger and company pay tribute with a choice selection of Berlin classics, including "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "Blue Skies", "Cheek To Cheek", "Let Yourself Go", and "Heat Wave".
