Daniel O. Cathey III holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance and Multiple Woodwinds from the University of Oregon, where he studied under Dr. Wayne Bennett. He received his Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1997, while studying under Dr. Theodore DeCorso. Previous to his appointment as tenure track faculty (2007-2009), Daniel was an adjunct instructor at UAF, and had an extensive private studio in Fairbanks, Alaska. He also taught clarinet at the American Music institute, the educational wing of the Oregon Festival of American Music. Currently, Daniel has a successful and robust private studio and a full clinic schedule with the local middle and high schools of the Eugene/Springfield area.
As a clarinet performer, Daniel is a current member and manager of Asculta! Woodwind Quintet, and principal clarinetist with the Eugene Concert Orchestra, which is part of the Eugene Concert Choir. He is also a member of the Platypus Clarinet Orchestra, and the Shedd Theatricals. He is a previous member of the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, the Arctic Chamber Orchestra, the Chinook Winds, and the Fairbanks Light Opera Theater. He has also played with the Borealis Brass, as a member of the Alaska Chamber Players, the Oregon Festival of American Music, the Oregon Mozart Players, The Eugene Opera, the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Coast Music Festival, and the Corvallis Symphony. As a saxophonist, Daniel is currently a member of the Swing Shift Jazz Orchestra, The resident jazz band for the Wildish Theater in Springfield, Oregon, the Blue Skies Jazz Band, and the Metropolitain Saxophone Quartet, Oregon’s premiere experimental saxophone quartet. He has also worked with the Starlighters Big Band.
Daniel has been a part of several recording projects. He played flute and clarinet as part of the Nolan Stolz Rock Orchestra on the album N.S.R.O. More recently, he performed with singer songwriter Theo Czuk on his album Too Many Shadows,/i>, and with the Eugene Concert Choir and Eugene Concert Orchestra on their future release of Shadow and Light by Joan Szymko.
