Discovering American Music
Wed, Oct 17, 7:30 - 9:00 pm
Sheffer Recital Hall, The Shedd Institute
A hundred years ago Cecil Sharp came to the US looking for old songs he could no longer hear sung in England, and he found them, in the southern Appalachians and northern cities. Song catchers of every stripe and motivation followed, academic folklorists and music lovers alike. Harold Courlander presented the first studies of Haitian and African American music, the WPA recorded songs and interviews in rural America and Alan Lomax recorded volumes of songs from Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie and others, along with a vast library of field recordings. We'll follow the trail of these song catchers and celebrate the treasures they found.
