The Harry Smith Anthology
String Band Classics from the Golden Age
Wed, Mar 9, 7:30 - 9:30 pm
Sheffer Recital Hall, The Shedd Institute
In 1952 experimental film maker and recording documentarian Harry Smith released the three-volume Anthology of American Folk Music, re-issuing out-of-print commercial recordings by Lemon Jefferson, the Carter Family, Uncle Dave Macon, Mississippi John Hurt, Charlie Poole and many others. In doing so he introduced the music of the 1920s to whole new audiences. The lesson was not lost on Pete and Mike Seeger, Dave van Ronk, The Holy Modal Rounders, the Lovin' Spoonful and countless others who took up the music and carried it forward. Let's go back in time and revisit the classics: "Wagoner's Lad," "White House Blues," "East Virginia," "Penny's Farm" and "Fifty Miles of Elbow Room".
