Looking to take an island vacation this summer? This rock camp is infused with the history and culture of Cuban, Jamaican, African and Belizean traditions, including jazz, reggae, and traditional folk music of the islands. Led by professional musician and native Belizean, Bibs Goff, this camp will explore music from traditional groups like Byron Lee and The Dragoneers, and The Mighty Sparrow.
Campers will learn to play songs from these regions and see how these rhythms and song structures continue to influence the contemporary music of today. Students will also break down popular songs and American favorites, such as, “Summertime”, “Comin’ Home Baby”, and “On Broadway” and re-arrange them into the traditional reggae and Caribbean rock styles. Students will learn new techniques, gain experience in music arrangement, and learn about traditional island instruments such as a brake drum, maracas, the cutta and segunda. While this camp is based in rock and island music, all instruments and vocalists are welcome!
