WEEK 1: Basic Jazz (beginner, June 26-30)
Interested in jazz music but don't know where to start? The Jazz Academy at The Shedd is a perfect place to get your feet wet, and maybe soaked, in the fundamentals of jazz. Students will work with jazz standards such as, “Killer Joe” by Benny Golson, “All Blues” by Miles Davis, and “C-Jam Blues” by Duke Ellington. Be sure to bring your instrument as we cover the basics of jazz history, form, theory, and even make some music ourselves. With help from some fantastic local jazz musicians, you'll hear and experience first-hand what this music is all about. Come join us and you'll be jamming in no time.
Basic Jazz is the 1st of 2 summer camps offered by The Shedd Institute as a part of its 2017
Jazz Academy for grades 6-12.

Each day will begin with a short introduction and review period, followed by an activity to engage students in the topic of the day. To give the student a foundational understanding of where jazz comes from, we’ll then focus on the history of the music. Guest artists and demonstrations will be featured throughout the week to answer students’ questions and help them experience jazz in a live setting. Each day will conclude with a chance for the students to play jazz and express what they’ve been learning.
