Bassist-composer-bandleader-pianist Charles Mingus was a man of many moods and emotions, and his wide-ranging music reflected his personality. His earliest influences included his mother's Holiness church and Duke Ellington. In the mid-1940s, the modern jazz of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie entered Mingus's musical sphere. If that wasn't enough, in the 1950s, Mingus's early Western classical music studies surfaced in a series of Third Stream recordings, and in 1960, he embraced the then-burgeoning Avant Garde movement. The rest of his career found him integrating all the styles that made Mingus Mingus. Among the classics to be performed at this multifaceted concert are "Better Get It In Your Soul", "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "Fables Of Faubus", and "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress (Then Blue Silk)".
