The classic 1941 Harold Arlen-Ted Koehler song “When the Sun Comes Out” tells the story of love lost, but also of hope for the future. That theme parallels the dramatic story told through song, in The Shedd Institute's original one-woman show, When The Sun Comes Out, which follows the story of a woman who begins at her emotional low point and who, through reflection, assessment, humor and eventual healing, builds her way back to being a strong and vital woman who is ready to take on all of life’s challenges and rewards.
Created by the extraordinary singer-actress Shirley Andress and veteran stage director Richard Jessup, When The Sun Comes Out is told through 17 songs from Songbook classics (Arlen and Mercer‘s “Any Place I Hang My Hat is Home”, the Gershwin’s “My One and Only”, Levin & Shafer’s “He Touched Me”), to musical theatre standards (Kander & Ebb’s “Colored Lights”, Loesser’s “Warm All Over” Arlen & Harburg’s “Down with Love”) and gems from the contemporary Songbook like “Rita’s Tune” from Hamlisch & Carnelia’s 1996 Sweet Smell of Success, “More to the Story”, from Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2008 Broadway adaptation of Shrek and Christine Lavin’s hysterical 1986 song “Air Conditioner”...which must be heard to be believed.
