Chico Schwall and company continue the 7th season of American Roots with an evening of river songs. "This idea first came to me," "Rivers", writes Chico. "Just rivers in song. As a child I learned a lot of American geography and history from the folk songs my music teacher taught us. The Erie Canal. Songs of rafts and barges and steamboats. The Mississippi, the Missouri. Songs of log driving (floating them down the river with guys leaping from log to log to keep them from jamming) are appropriate to Oregon. The "Rivers of Texas" song has been recast as the "Rivers of Illinois" (by Win Stracke) and "Rivers of Oregon" (by Adam Miller, who beat me to it!). The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 ("Backwater Blues", "Mississippi Heavy Water Blues", "High Water Everywhere", "Louisiana 1927" etc.), Woody Guthrie's "Roll On, Columbia". The Hudson. The Willamette. The Suwannee. And I'm just getting started." The result is, as always with Chico, as much an evening of wonderful, entertaining music as an insightful journey down the rich and complex byways of roots music, where the paths of the traditional, sacred, classic and popular endlessly cross and merge.
