The songs of George and Ira Gershwin present perhaps the biggest challenge. So well-known have their songs become, and so often have they been performed by so many artists of widely divergent styles, that it is often difficult to disassociate the songs from one’s own personal preferences for (or remembrances of) recording artists, from Al Jolson to Ella Fitzgerald. There is also the formidable legacy of George Gershwin’s instrumental concert works and his opera Porgy and Bess, which is finally being hailed as the masterpiece that it is. But these concert works have also become an integral part of popular music and jazz as well. For this program, expect to hear everything from "The Real American Folk Song", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Rhapsody In Blue" and "I Got Rhythm" to Porgy and Bess and "A Foggy Day". You will also hear songs written by each of the Gershwin brothers without the other ("Swanee", "I Can’t Get Started").
