Background, professional training and performance history
Connie Gardner is new to the Eugene area, and she has quickly delved into the musical community. She currently plays principal clarinet with the Salem Philharmonic Orchestra and the Willamette Valley Symphony. Connie has always believed in engaging in community ensembles, and since she moved to Eugene two years also, she has played with the Platypus Clarinet Choir, the Eugene Symphonic Band, and the Alder Street Wind Quintet.
Originally from Northern California, Connie earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Music Performance from Southern Oregon University in Ashland. She then moved to Laramie, Wyoming, where she earned a Master of Music in Music Performance from the University of Wyoming. Connie has always enjoyed teaching, and has travelled to Michigan to work at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. She teaches clarinet and saxophone, and her students have performed at the top of their school and community ensembles.
Outside of music, Connie enjoys running marathons and exploring the Pacific Northwest
Artist statement and teaching philosophy
“First and foremost, I believe in helping my students feel successful in their playing. I work with students towards whatever their goals may be; whether it’s being first chair in the school band, playing Disney songs with friends, or playing a concerto. I enjoy finding creative learning exercises that are fun and approachable in an effort to link the basics to larger musical ideas; so even tedious scales connect to the sonata we’re working on. I also believe in sharing a love for the clarinet and saxophone. These are beautiful instruments and I work with my students to develop a full, colorful sound that is fun to play and listen to."
