Maria Jette is joined by Sonja Thompson in a program of art songs in the beautiful, evocative and intriguing flavor of nationalistic Romanticism so that played such a prominent role 20th century Latin America, both politically and socially. Characterized both by the direct infusion of folk and popular music and by compositions in the style of those folk and popular traditions, Latin American musical nationalism boasts a beauty of line and cadence that is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Featured composers on this evening include Andres Sas (Peru), Alberto Nepomuceño (Brazil), Camargo Guarnieri (Brazil), Isabel Aretz (Venezuela), and Carlos Guastavino (Argentina).
