Sure On This Shining Night
Vocal & chamber works by Samuel Barber & Aaron Copland
Thu, Nov 9, 7:30 - 9:30 pm
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
Siri Vik returns to her classical roots for an evening of vocal and chamber works by American composers Samuel Barber (1910-81) and Aaron Copland (1900-90). Accompanied by pianist Nathalie Fortin and conductor Robert Ashens with chamber orchestra, Vik performs Barber's exquisite setting of James Agee's 1938 prose poem Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (1947), eight of Aaron Copland's 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson for piano and voice (1950), and four additional songs by Barber selected from his vast vocal opus: "Nocturne", "Of That So Sweet Imprisonment", "Bessie Bobtail", and "Sure On This Shining Night". The program also features two instrumental masterpieces of 20th century American art music: Copland's Appalachian Spring (1944), and Barber's Adagio for Strings (1936).
