Celebrated by critics as "the best bassist alive," virtuoso Edgar Meyer has changed notions of the double bass, and all string instruments, with his exclusive technique. His original compositions, ranging in genre from classical to bluegrass, have been premiered by the Emerson String Quartet, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Meyer became the only bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize in 2000 and was awarded the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2002. His collaborations albums with Bela Fleck, Perpetual Motion, and Yo-Yo Ma, Appalachian Journey, both captured Grammy awards. His April 16th appearance at The Shedd with piano accompanist Amy Dorfman, Meyer will feature original compositions and improvisations and a set of his own transcriptions for double bass of pieces by Vivaldi, Schubert, Bloch, Chopin and Kreisler.
