E. Y. Harburg & Harold Arlen (1939/87)
The Wizard of Oz
Fri, Sep 14 - Sun, Sep 30
Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute
L. Frank Baum’s beloved 1900 children’s tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was hardly unfamiliar to Depression-era America: a hugely successful 1903 stage production had achieved the longest Broadway run of the 1910s and toured the country for 8 years thereafter; and several popular Oz films were released between 1908 and 1933. But when M-G-M premiered its own version of the tale on August 15, 1939 at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the impact on the American psyche was staggering and permanent. It seems almost everything about this Arthur Freed production was magic, from an exceptional screenplay and lyrical, catchy songs to truly inspired art direction and a cast that was spot on perfect, from Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley as the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Man to the young Judy Garland who captivated all, young and old alike, at the time and ever since, singing that particular song in a black and white Kansas as storm clouds loomed.
The Shedd Institute presents the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1987 stage adaptation of this legendary motion picture, which follows the original screenplay almost verbatim and retains all of the great Yip Harburg/Harold Arlen songs, including “If I Only Had A Brain”, “We’re Off To See The Wizard”, “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead”, and, of course, “Over The Rainbow”.
Our production is directed by Richard Jessup; Robert Ashens is music director and conductor; and Caitlin Christopher choreographs. The show features Kenady Conforth as Dorothy, Tom Wilson, Dylan Stasack and Miriam Major as the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion, Janet Whitlow as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Sophia James, Ward Fairbairn and Phil Dempsey as Glenda, The Emerald City Guard and The Wizard!
