For all these years that the Emerald City Jazz Kings have been putting on shows, you, our audience has happily come along with us for the ride. It is always us choosing the themes and songs for the shows and you attending and listening (and we are so glad that you are here!). But, it is time to try something new and change that. For one show, you, our fantastic audience members, get to pick the songs that you want to hear. We are calling this show “You Asked For It” and that is exactly what we want you to do. Here is how it is going to work: for this show we play any song that the Jazz Kings have ever played for any size ensemble ranging from duet to full big band with four vocalists. We will consider any song from Tin Pan Alley to Great American Songbook to big band classic, from ballads to waltzes to foxtrots to up tempo swingers. We can cover anyone from Bessie Smith to Judy Garland, and Al Jolson to Frank Sinatra, or any band from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to Stan Kenton.
Over the next nine months we will be accepting song nominations through the Shedd’s website and in person at the Fall and Winter Jazz Kings shows. We will tabulate the results and the songs with the most requests will be the songs on the program. The last date to make a song request is February 11th, 2018, the date of the final show of the Winter Jazz Kings series. In the Fall Jazz Kings show we will announce what songs are getting the most votes and remind you to send in your requests. We hope that you will take a few moments to cast your vote and help us make this show a truly unique and outstanding program that all of us will enjoy and remember fondly.
Just to get the ball rolling, we've selected 8 solid Swing Era hits that we think would round out any show well. So let us know how you'd like us to fill in the rest!
