Shirley Andress leads the Emerald City Jazz Kings in a celebration of the extraordinary singer & actress, Doris Day (1922-2019), the girl with a sunny spirit and the uncanny ability to look on the bright side remains one of the premier female vocalists of all time. Her sultry, velvety style scored 76 chart-topping singles: “Sentimental Journey”, “Que Sera Sera”, “It’s Magic”, “Secret Love”, “Love Somebody” and “Aren’t You Glad You’re You” to name a few. She was Columbia Record’s ‘go-to girl’ from 1947-67 recording more than 600 tunes. She had so many chart-topping hits that Bob Hope called her, Jukebox Jenny.
Day was blessed with an understanding of lyrics that made her songs sound exceedingly intimate. “The most important thing when singing," she said, "is to make it seem as though you are singing to just one person”. According to Paul Westin, “Doris never knew how good she really was”. She was quite versatile singing songs in nearly every single genre of music: big band & jazz to ballads and country.
Singing wasn’t Day’s only gift. She became a silver screen icon – a natural actor with a charismatic force. Film critic Rex Reed said, “She was smart, funny, warm, beautiful in a sunny, wholesome way and surprisingly, unfailingly sexy”. Doris starred in 39 feature films over a 20-year span. Some of her best songs came from movies like Romance On The High Seas, Young Man With A Horn, Love Me Or Leave Me and Calamity Jane.
