"Porter is so famous for his gifts as a lyricist," noted Adam Gopnick in The New Yorker in 2020, "that it might seem mischievous to the point of perversity to suggest that his real greatness resides in his skills as a composer. Yet how many other popular composers have had more hits with instrumental, unsung versions of their work?" We would say, from the point of view of jazz at least, "good point": Cole Porter (1891-1964), like Rodgers and unlike Arlen and Gershwin, had precious little to do with the world of jazz. Yet his songs have always been an especial favorite of jazz musicians.
To wrap up the week's concert series, Chuck Redd and his Festival jazz unit welcome Siri Vik and Michael Stone for a fine selection of songs from Cole Porter's substantial opus which have become jazz standards.
(Don't miss the jazz party on Sunday!)
