“The whole of Paris is a vast university of Art, Literature and Music…it is worth anyone’s while to dally here for years. Paris is a seminar, a post-graduate course in Everything.” James Thurber, 1918
We begin our week-long celebration of the rich and wonderful musical world of Paris between the wars with a geographic and temporal ramble through the streets, nightclubs, cabarets, and concert halls of 1920s and '30s Paris -- a moveable feast, if you will, taking a taste as we go of a little of everything we'll be experiencing more deeply throughout the week: a bit from Montmartre, then over to Montparnasse, Champs-Elisees, and Saint-Germain-des-Pres. Mistingett and Chevaliers. Baker and Bechet. The Hot Club of France. The Six. The Martinique sounds of Stellio. The comfortable, American world of Bricktop, so stylishly peopled by Fitzgerald, Hemingway and the expats of the '20s and Porter, the Duke of Windsor and cosmopolitan set of the '30s. And all along the way, the arrival, embrace and transformation of American jazz and popular culture into something still American, yet French, and both.
